Chronicles of the Broken Throne

Long ago, two sects moved unseen beneath the surface of the world. The Covenant, sworn to preserve balance and protect creation from ruin. And the Hollow, who believed the world must be remade, though their true designs were whispered only in shadow.

Between them stood King Merrin, a ruler of a broken throne and darker ambition. His sons were raised in his image: Nero, hungry for the black arts, and Mortimer, a fool who played the jester’s part, his laughter echoing through the yard while others whispered of destiny.

In that yard lived Korrin, the greatest blacksmith of his age, secretly loyal to the Covenant. His wife, Leah, was caught stealing fruit from the royal garden, a small crime, but not her first. Merrin seized upon it as a chance to break the blacksmith’s spirit.

He commanded Korrin to forge a blade unlike any other, and when it was finished, Merrin twisted the craftsman’s will with sorcery, forcing him to strike down the woman he loved. Korrin believed himself damned, until the wizard Althalian and the priest Malachi revealed the truth: it was Merrin’s magic that guided his hand.

Together they laid enchantments upon the blade. First, Malachi wove Silence, so that any spellcaster struck by its edge would find their voice stolen, their incantations swallowed before they could be spoken. Then Althalian bound the weapon in an Anti‑Magic Shell, so that Merrin could never again twist its purpose with his sorcery. When the work was done, they consecrated the blade, Wishbreaker, for it had been born of grief and broken vows, yet remade as a weapon of defiance.

With Wishbreaker in hand, Korrin confronted the king. In a moment of defiance, he struck Merrin down, and the throne room shook with the weight of betrayal. But death did not claim the king. His sons dragged him from the hall, desperate to preserve his soul before it was lost to the pit.

They raced toward a necromancer, hoping to bind Merrin’s spirit before decay could take hold. Yet time was short, and despair pressed hard upon them. Fearing they would not reach the necromancer in time, Nero invoked a forbidden spell that bound Merrin’s essence and remade him as a Lich.

No longer a king, Merrin became something worse... a creature of endless hunger, opening dark portals in search of a power only he could name. His corruption threatened both sects alike, for he had abandoned prophecy and balance alike in pursuit of dominion.

And so the wizard Althalian spoke: "Heroes must rise. They must hunt Merrin across the world, through ruins and portals, through silence and shadow." This is where the saga begins with a choice of allegiance, and a quest to end the reign of the Lich King before his hunger devours all.
